Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a condition in which abnormal bone growth develops in the middle ear, typically around the stapes bone. This prevents the small bones of the ear from vibrating properly, leading to progressive hearing loss, most often a conductive type. It usually develops gradually in adulthood and may affect one or both ears. In some cases, it can be managed with hearing aids, and surgery (stapedectomy) may be an option to restore hearing.

What Causes Otosclerosis?

The exact cause of otosclerosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It often runs in families, suggesting a hereditary component. The condition develops when abnormal bone remodeling occurs in the middle ear, leading to stiffening of the stapes bone and reduced sound transmission. Hormonal changes, such as those related to pregnancy, may also influence its progression in some individuals.

Because the symptoms of otosclerosis can resemble those of other ear conditions, a thorough evaluation by an otolaryngologist is important to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes. Hearing tests often reveal a pattern of conductive hearing loss, particularly in the lower frequencies, which is a characteristic finding in otosclerosis.

In mild cases, hearing aids may be used to amplify sound and improve hearing. For more advanced cases, a surgical procedure called a stapedectomy may be recommended. During this surgery, the affected stapes bone is partially or completely replaced with a prosthetic device, allowing sound to be transmitted more effectively to the inner ear and improving hearing.

As with any surgery, there are potential risks to consider, but without treatment, otosclerosis typically continues to worsen over time. It is important to discuss all available options with your physician to determine the most appropriate approach for your hearing loss.
