Head and neck cancers typically begin in the squamous cells that line the mouth, nose, and throat. When detected early, these cancers are often highly treatable and may respond well to surgery or radiation therapy.
These cancers are grouped based on their location in the body, including:
Oral cavity: The lips, tongue, gums, hard palate, and inside of the mouth.
Larynx: The voice box, including the vocal cords and epiglottis.
Pharynx: The throat, which is divided into three parts: the nasopharynx (upper section behind the nose), oropharynx (middle section containing the soft palate and tonsils), and hypopharynx (lower section).
Paranasal sinuses: Air-filled spaces within the nasal cavity.
Salivary glands: Glands located in the lower part of the mouth near the jaw.
It is important to note that other nearby cancers, such as thyroid cancer and brain tumors, are classified separately because they behave differently from head and neck cancers.
Causes of head & neck Cancer
Head and neck cancers develop when cells in the mouth, throat, nose, or related structures grow abnormally. The most common risk factors are tobacco use (including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and vaping) and heavy alcohol consumption. Using both tobacco and alcohol together greatly increases risk.
Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), especially HPV-16, is a major cause of cancers in the throat, particularly the oropharynx. Long-term exposure to irritants such as secondhand smoke, industrial chemicals, or wood dust may also contribute.
Additional risk factors include poor oral hygiene, chronic irritation, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, and a weakened immune system. Age and gender also play a role, with most cases occurring in adults over 50 and more commonly in men.

PROGNOSIS
The prognosis for head and neck cancer varies widely depending on several factors, including the type of cancer, its location, the stage at diagnosis, and the patient’s overall health. Cancers that are detected early are generally more treatable and have a better outlook, often responding well to surgery, radiation, or a combination of therapies.
Advanced-stage cancers that have spread to nearby tissues, lymph nodes, or distant organs are more complex to treat and may require a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. In these cases, treatment is often focused on controlling the disease, improving quality of life, and reducing symptoms.
Other important factors that influence prognosis include whether the cancer is linked to human papillomavirus (HPV), with HPV-positive throat cancers often having a better response to treatment, and whether the patient continues to use tobacco or alcohol during or after treatment.
Overall outcomes continue to improve due to advances in early detection, surgical techniques, and targeted therapies. Regular follow-up care is essential to monitor for recurrence and manage any long-term effects of treatment.
